Good day, sewing lovers!
Welcome to Yarn Forward, a website for sewist community to gather and start some small talks about how sewing occupies our hearts and minds.
Here you’ll find the best tips for all sewing techniques you need to know to level up from a sewing hobbyist to a designer.
About Me
Fintech is a popular phrase these days, but I don’t know why there’s no phrase as such for people who lovetrend and technology applications in fashion. So, I’m going to introduce myself as a fashion-tech millennial who enjoys talking about arts and crafts in general.
My name is Mary, graduated in Art & Design in 2017, and passionate about making clothes all my life. I’m the author of Yarn Forward, a website that has much interesting needlework information that can lead you from a beginner to a professor in making fashion, crafts, and home décor.
During my past time in school and college, I spent a lot of time studying fashion and had a great passion for designing clothes. I have been involved in costume design and fashion consulting for several university’s shows. I used to collaborate as a stylist for modeling shows and some music videos.
I am currently working as a personal stylist. But to satisfy my passion and desire to share knowledge about fashion, trends, garment technology to the millennial generation, I create Yarn Forward and spend most of my time working as an author and a freelance writer for this website.
Besides my knowledge of fashion, such as in a scale from 1 to 10 I can help rate which grades your outfit is, I also have a good grasp of many ways to make a decent dress for all levels. It’s a benefit arising from my work on many previous design projects.
All my design projects require at least the proficiency of using the sewing machine. I have spent most of my time experimenting with sewing machines from industrial to computerized sewing machines, working on projects that use long-arm quilting, embroidery machines, etc.
To keep up with fashion trends, I have to master all the skills regarding clothes embellishment, such as quilting, embroidery, applique, beading, making ruffles, etc.
In my free time, I also learn some other skills in knitting and crocheting classes. I’m confident that I can handle almost all the techniques about making a top-notch outfit.
About My Sewing
Unlike how sewists often talk about their sewing passion inherited from their mother, unfortunately, my mother doesn’t do sewing. My grandmother is not a professional seamstress, either. And there has never been a treadle sewing machine in our house.
But here the twist:
My aunt loves sewing
I have an aunt who has no children to live with. That’s why her nephews and nieces are her greatest love. Especially me – the apple of her eyes.
Ever since I was a kid, she loved to make me many baby bibs, gloves, and socks. She sewed and embroidered my name on most of my shirt.
In the ’90s we didn’t have much money to shop for high tech stuff, so her companion was a treadle sewing machine. She sewed everything with that classic sewing machine until she could afford a secondhand Brother sewing machine. It was a big step in her sewing career.
Instead of scrupulously threading the needle and modifying an item over and over, she now can create more outfits for all nephews and nieces. I believe that a good sewing machine can spark joy in the life of every woman like my aunt.
That’s why I’m intrigued by sewing. I started to experience the classic sewing machine when I was 10 years old. At first, it was a real challenge for a child to handle such a bulky machine, but my aunt’s treadle sewing machine was my first step to this day.
Like you, I started with small crafts, doll clothes, aprons, etc. And just like you, I turned many beautiful fabrics to craps. However, failure is the successful mother. I soon mastered the sewing machine and started the first intricate designs at 12 years old.
Besides learning how to make clothes, I did notice the way sewing machine manufacturers are racing to advance in the revamp of sewing machines to deliver the best performance. I love technology, and I have believed in the technological revolution of sewing machines.
I spent some time experimenting with a variety of sewing machines, be impressed with a few, buy a few, and introduce you to all the best sewing machines I’ve found.
